I would like to clarify something here.

MS Exchange can be configured several ways.
It can be set up so that a user's saved mail is stored on the Exchange
server.
Then you are talking about backing up part of the Exchange data base.
The only way to do that is by taking down Exchange or having an Exchange
agent, as Del described below.

Your MS Exchange can also be configured so that users have saved mail
stored in .pst files on their OWN PC's.
These are the .pst files that have been discussed in several emails
today.
An ADSM client incremental backup will bypass these files if the user
has the Exchange CLIENT open, because the files are locked for exclusive
access. ADSM can't read them (nor can anything else).
The user's Exchange address book (a .pab file) is also usually on the
local PC, and locked when the Exchange CLIENT is open.

(We have an even worse mess - SOME of our users store personal folders
(.pst files) in their home directories on network file servers. So we
have to worry about when the ADSM backup runs on those file
servers.....)

ANYWAY, the point is, some sites consider their email to be critical.
If you are trying to get complete backups of your MS Exchange mail, you
have to consider (1) Mail that resides in the Exchange data base on the
Exchange SERVER machine, and (2) mail that resides in users' .pst files
on their own machines, and (3) possible .pst files on other machines in
your network!

        Eliza,

Microsoft Exchange Server can be backed with the normal ADSM
client
ONLY if the Exchange server is down. (i.e. offline backup)
In order to back up the Exchange Server while it is running
(online) you must
have an external application that talks with the Exchange server
through
        their API interface.

The good news is IBM is working on an ADSM Agent to do this for
you.
The ADSMConnect Agent For Microsoft Exchange Server is being
worked on.
Unfortunately, I am not allowed to disclose when it will be
released.
There will be some announcements early this year that will give
more
        information.
Until then, you should use the NTBACKUP facility for doing
online backups
and ADSM to do offline backups.

        Thanks,

A user of mine wants to use ADSM to backup Microsoft Exchange
mail files.
ADSM is ignoring these files now. Any help will be appreciated.
