Macintosh files on an NT server....

Jerry,

The ADSM V2 NT (32-bit) client doesn't support NT "Services for Macintosh"
volumes.  We are currently using a dedicated Macintosh system for this
purpose.

My understanding is that the ADSM NT V3 client is supposed to provide that
support but I haven't tried it yet.

I have a customer who is a Macintosh bigot, but has allowed the heresy of

NT V4 Server to be installed in his office.  On that machine, he has set up
a
Macintosh volume, with support for typical Mac long file names.  This
morning
he called me with some alarm, after he looked at his DSMERROR log.  It
seems
he has approximately 300 messages similar to the following:

He checked his DSMSched.log, and interestingly enough, there was no
indication of any problem there - there are only the normal skip messages
for
the 3 open files that he always gets (NTUSER.DAT, etc.)  The summary
indication shows no errors - just the 3 error messages.
I am alarmed by the fact that ADSM is skipping files, but not showing it in
the summary.  But before I open a problem with the support center, I
thought
I'd check here and see if anyone else had seen the problem.
There was also another good question raised - what constitutes a valid file
name?   How long can it be (on NT)?  What characters are supported?   The
error log that he sent me has a wide variety of strange characters that
printed when I looked at a copy of the error log via a Word Processor -
things like Trade Mark (TM) superscripts, Registered marks (R in circle),
and
the Mac folder symbol (script F).  The consistent thing seemed to be a
question mark in each file name - I believe that this is from ADSM and that
the file names do not actually have a ? in them.
There are, just for the record, many files out on the MAC file space that
do
get successfully backed up.
The good stuff - client is Win32 (NT) V2.1.0.6; the Machine is running NT
server V4 (not sure of the SP level), and the ADSM server is MVS at
2.1.0.13
