We had a problem similar to that and it turned out to be Virusscan running in
the background.  When we disabled it everything worked fine.

Whenever I attempt a client gui backup and select backup by directory tree,
for example, the gui never reacts.It sits on the screen  and blanks itself
out. WHat is wrong with it?
