3. I would say that the consistency is vary important, to change users
( and in some cases we a talking a lot of users) will have to be retrain.
Each user who sees the new presentation will call to see what it means or how
to use it, this will put a burden on the ADSM support personnel which in most
cases is very limited.

I'll Apologize for reposting this, the 9 of you that have responded can hit
the delete key now. For the rest of you, I'd appreciate it if you would take
a look at this again, and please respond before Friday (the 21st).

Also, you don't have to be employed at a .EDU to answer the last question....

Some of you will no doubt remember the notes that were posted last week about
the new V3 clients. I posted some notes (First impressions of V3
clients....) which drew some responses. Since those were posted, Mike Dile
of IBM NT client development and I have been having some interesting, and I
believe fruitful discussions about the client and it's presentation. We are
not quite ready to post the results of those meetings, but we have agreed
that a couple of items are worthy of a survey from the list. That is the
purpose of this note. The survey itself is only a few questions, plus the
chance for an essay type response. Unfortunately, some of the questions are
somewhat complicated, so this note will be longer than average. Please take
the time to review the options before you reply. It is not required that you
have installed the V3 Win32 clients (although it may help). You may choose
to do so; I can say that installation of the V3 client will not cause any
problems - just the usual stuff - once installed, and you back something up,
you can't go back..... But it does work very well.

As with all surveys PLEASE RESPOND BACK TO ME DIRECTLY. I will collect all
of the responses and post the results.

1. The new backup/restore interface resembles the Windows Explorer in it's
presentation. That is - there is a "top" level with your node name, a
selection box, and a + sign indicating there are levels below. If you click
on the plus, you will see two levels - your local machine, and the network
drives available to you. If you click on the + next to local, you will see
the drives available to you (including floppies and CD ROMs), clicking on
the + sign next to any of the drives will expand the directory tree. The
process can continue until you reach the bottom of the hierarchy. Clicking
in the selection box next to a level selects that level and all of the levels
below it. At what level do you feel these boxes first become appropriate for
general use?

A. At The Node level (highest - can backup everything he has access to)
B. At the Second Level (backup all the network or backup all media attached
to the client
C. At The drive level (backup all files on a particular drive or file
system).

2. When a selection on which files are needed for a backup or restore is
made, the state (color) of the selection boxes will change. Below are two
combinations of how these boxes will react. Please view this as an end user
would view it.

A.
> gray = no files/dirs selected this directory or any subordinate
directory
> half-yellow = some files/dirs selected in this directory or any
subordinate
directory.
> all yellow = all the files subordinate to this directory have been
explicitly selected, but this parent directory was not
explicitly checked
by the user.
> yellow w/check = this file/dir. was explicitly selected.

B:
> gray - Nothing selected.
> half- yellow - some files and/or directories will be backed up.
> all yellow - all files (but not all directories) will be backed up
> yellow check - all files and directories at this level and below are
selected.

As you think of the above, here are some samples, and how the two methods
would be applied.

Given - a Three level directory structure C:\L\M\N. At the first level,
(\L) there are no files, just directory entries for lower levels. At the
second level (\M) there are 3 files. At the third level, there are many
files (more than 50).

Behavior:

Example 1. If I want to backup the whole structure, I can now click at the
highest level (\L) all selection boxes on all 3 levels will show a yellow
check. The root of this drive will be half-yellow.

Example 2. If I want to backup just level 2 and three, I can click on \M,
and the selection box for both it and \N will show a yellow check. The
difference between the two will be that with A:, the first level (\L) will be
solid yellow. With the B: option it will be half yellow.

Example three. You just want to back up the middle level. You click on \M,
and both \M and \N are selected. You then click on \N to deselect it.
**OR** you simply select all of the members in the \M level manually. With
scenario A: the result would be a half yellow box for \M and all of the
levels above it. In scenario B: the \M level would be solid yellow, and the
levels above it would be half-yellow.

There are other examples possible, think of them if you would like.

3. -Essay question for those of you from a .EDU that would like extra
credit.

Do you think that a new design should strive to match the presentation of
similar structures and products provided by the operating system, or do you
think he should maintain compatibility with previous releases. Where in this
decision should "ease of use" be measured against "consistency with the
presentation of the interface"?
