Yes, it will work!
Read all about it in appendix A of the admin ref (my copy is SH26-4040-00).
The standalone restore from 'backup db' output has 4 modes, one of which is
'restoring a database to a specific point in time - volume history file
unavailable'.
I keep the volumes known to the volumehistory on-site so I can do a
recovery to the current state in case of a disk failure.
