I'm somewhat new to working with ADSM and I've been stuck with the task
of implementing a Grandfather Father Son tape rotation scheme. Here's
the situation:

One (1) ADSM server with a 10 tape 3590 subsystem. Two (2) or more FDDI
attached ADSM clients. All systems are AIX 4.1. ADSM is v2r1m5. There
is only a single tape drive, an 18GB disk space for storage pools and
not DRM or HSM modules.

What the end user wants is to cut daily backups Monday through Friday
and have them expire in one week. Daily tapes will get recycled each
week. This will result in 5 sets of daily tapes. They also want weekly
full backups done on Saturdays and they will have between 3 and 5 of
these sets at any given time. These weekly tapes will get recycled each
month. Monthly backups are actually defined differently for production
and Q&A files, but both of them are a full backup. Production monthly
backups will be kept for 36 months (3 years) and Q&A monthly backups
will be kept for 3 months. At year end their will be a full backup that
gets kept forever.

Also, after each days backup the tapes that were written to will be
taken out of the library and moved offsite. Only tapes that are due to
be recycled will be brought back onsite for recycling & reuse.

From all that I've been able to read in the manuals & redbooks this
seems to go against the normal tape management of ADSM.

Is it possible to achieve this with ADSM? My biggest problem so far has
been in trying to figure out how to define the policy sets, policies and
management classes to allow the same set of files to be backed up for
the Daily, Weekly, Monthly Prod, Monthly Q&A and Yearly backup sets.
The different retention times, copy #'s & repeat cycle times are giving
a royal headache.

Does anybody out there have any docs on how such a beast is configured?
Any response is welcome. I've been through the redbooks for Tape
Management, Adavanced Topics and Real World Implementation Experiences
and none of them goes over anything similar this.
