We are not actually using the Oracle agent but we do use the SAP
backint agent. This is, I suspect, a comparable situation. Backint
is an interface which allows the SAP application to backup and recover
its Oracle database using ADSM without having to stop the
application.

Backint is expensive (especially in comparison to some other products
purporting to do the same job) but it works. Operationally it has the
advantage of being automatically scheduled and saving us the cost of
operator staff management of the process (ADSM tells them what to do
when it needs help - a tape mount) and avoids errors like missed
backups and overwritten tapes. The advantage over locally written
scripts is that SAP have developed, and certified, their own database
management tools and will certify products which comply with the
interfaces necessary to use those tools correctly to backup and
recover the database. It works for organisations with small staff and
infrequently used DBA skills; especially during late night disasters!
