Just a thought, but maybe it will help...

When you run ADSM as a service it is using the system account.  When you
run it in a window you are using the account that is logged on at the
time.  It would appear that something about the rights of your system
account are not allowing the backups to occur.  An easy way to see if
this is truly your problem would be to setup the ADSM Scheduler Service
to logon as a specific account (in the Startup options) and see if it
works.  If it does, then you know you've pinpointed your problem and can
dig a little deeper into the rights, etc...
