Julie, you really shouldn't need to boot to DOS -- but you *will* have
two bootable partitions when you're done. Here's the way I've done it
(never tried with ADSM, but used with locally attached tape):
1) It helps *very much* if you've planned for this from the start -
install NT on the C: drive, about 128 to 180 MB partition
2) re-install NT on the D: drive -- any sizy you want
3) edit the BOOT.INI file on the C: drive to make the D: drive your
primary boot device -- but leave the C: drive available (dual boot
configuration, two NT systems)
4) ignore the C: drive from now on

In a disaster recovery --
1) Install NT to the C; partition
2) Install ADSM (or your favorite restore utility)
3) Format the D: drive as required (FAT, NTFS, whatever)
4) Restore the D: drive
5) Edit BOOT.INI to aim at the D: drive (leave the C: drive available
for boot!)
6) Reboot

For unlike systems:
4a) Use the NT utilities to get the machine-specific hives from the C:
registry
4b) Apply the machine-specific hives to the D: registry

I've not done 4a or 4b, so I can't be more specific; I'm not even sure
if the tools are on the server distribution, or on the NT resource kit.
We will be trying this later in the month in the lab.

Also, note that you don't *have* to be configured this way initially for
this to work, as long as you have 128 - 180 MB of free space on the
drive -- but you'll have to use disk manager to re-assign drive letters
if all your software has been installed to the C: drive. Make the 128 MB
partition something like 'Q' or 'Z', and the big partition 'C',
and shuffle all the other letters . . .
