        Ken,
We currently have about 40 Nt Servers that we backup using ADSM, Some
have databases, mostly SQL server but we do have Sybase running on AIX
that we also backup to ADSM.
We had used ARCserve as a backup, however we found it to be unreliable,
we did lose 2 servers that supposedly had good backups but we were
unable to restore them when we really needed too. We've had no such
        problems with ADSM.
Unless you are going to locally attach tape drives to each server your
network issues will be a constant across all backup providers. We had
considered this option but found the logistics of changing over 100
tapes a night by hand to be unmanageable, not to mention storage of the
tapes and locating them when we might need them. We opted for a tape
robot and library, thus automating this task.
Additionally by using the robot we were able to gain tape speed ( we
get about 6 MB per second on each 3590 drive) larger capacity tapes
(30gb per tape), thus allowing us to backup many more clients than if
we had to manually change tapes on all the servers. By using the ADSM
storage pools we are able to backup more clients at any point in time
        than we have available drives.
ADSM also allows us to create archives of our database files to be
maintained separately from our daily backups, this makes development
much easier as we have have a clearly defined fallback point if
        development requirements change.
ADSM at this point will not backup open files, it will try 4 times to
catch a file in a closed state. There are add on products that will
        backup open files.
Of course the Database backups need to be done by a product that will
handle the Database backup correctly, We use the Datatools product, it
        works well with ADSM.
We've found ADSM backs up the registry as well as other products, as
long as you are restoring to the same machine it works well, most of
the other products we've looked at all have problems when you change
        the hardware.

Hope this might help you out a bit,
        Tom Boyle

We are currently installing NT boxes for Sybase servers,,, We have IBM
mainframes as well as AIX... The IBM folks would like us to use the ADSM
product to backup our servers but we are leary. Most of us come from the
LAN environment and are concerned about backing up servers across our Token
Ring (16) and the availability of the backed up data when we have a
problem. All the NT vendors are recommending LAN based software (ie
ArcServe) and caution us that the ADSM product will not fully backup open
files, and the registry... I Was hoping that someone had some experience
in this arena and could give us a headstart on evaluating these options.

As far as the server /Client question - Were not sure ... That depends on
the response time and controls we will have in the envronment.

By the way, All the servers are Compaq 5000 with - 4 200Mhz processors and
256MB RAM and 40GB DASD and four TR cards.

Thanks in advance for the responses..,

Ken

Ken,

Quite a few of us use ADSM on NT. Are you interested in NT as ADSM
clients or as a ADSM Server?
