This is in response to Wayne Gorton's note about 3494 tape mounts taking around
11 minutes. We had the same problem when we first set ours up and it turned
out to be the way we had TCP/IP configured in the Library Manager. I'm
going to assume that Wayne's 3494 is LAN attached through either an Ethernet
or Token Ring adapter. Here's how we fixed our 3494:

1. First of all the 3494 Library Manager is really a PC running OS/2 and
TCP/IP. At the main Library Manager screen choose Mode -> Service Mode.
2. Choose menu item Utilities -> Service Window . This will bring up an OS/2
   window.
3. cd \tcpip\bin
4. tcpipcfg
5. Click on the "Services" tab.
Make sure the value in "This machine's hostname" is fully qualified (i.e.
   adsm3494.xyz.com)
Make sure the "Domain Name" is blank.
Make sure the "Domain Nameservers" says "<NO ENTRIES>"
6. Click on the "Network" tab.
Make sure the IP address and the subnet mask are correct.
7. Double click to close the window and press the "Save" button when asked
if you want to save the configuration.
8. Reboot the 3494 and, hopefully, everything should work normally.

The IBM Support Center said that if the IP config is set up incorrectly or
only partially (e.g. we had the "Domain Name" set, but no Nameservers) that
the Library Manager code times out during DNS lookups. It apparently does
lots of lookups because we were seeing in the 7 minute range for tape mounts
before making the above changes.

Hope this helps.
