Is there any list of ~task~ priorities ?
All I've seen is a few blurps on "when resources are required by a
higher priority task, such as a restore it can preempt a lower
priority task such as a backup"
I've got multiple needs, here is my situation.
This one 591 RS/6000 that last month had 10,000,000 (yeah, 10 million
plus) files sent to it at about 4.5 terabytes. It is at 2.1.0.9 but
also is at 99.99% cpu util about 24 hrs/day I've not been able to
empty the 240 GB diskpool yet THIS YEAR !
I've got people "DEMANDING process blah and/or session blah be
canceled BECAUSE THEY ARE INTERFERING WITH MY blah !" (fill in with
backup, archive, restore, retrieve, db backup, migration, reclamation,
expiration, ...) I try to tell them that it works things out itself
but then they want proof... They claim something MUST be broke, I say
just wait it will happen and they want proof. Proof to them is
something in print.
So I find myself A) up 23 hours a day 7 days a week trying to figure
out how I can get daily activity to happen (and GOD already rejected
the 30 hour day) B) in front of the firing squad with one last
chance to explain why I did what I did and "I had to see if it would
make a difference" doesn't cut it C) being reincarnated nightly just
so I can be shot daily D) not making much progress 'cause each day
its a different firing squad.
NOTE: I've got a 595 upgrade due in about 5 weeks, I've got another
R40 due in about ?8? weeks, I've got to justify my actions and I've
got to get some sleep...
I've got 2.1.0.12 here but can't get caught up to put it on... it
might have to wait for the new R40 to show up. I can't route backups
to a less loaded machine due to missing network band width.
So if anyone can point me to anything that mentions what task has what
priority in relation to other tasks at least I can put the daily user
yelling behind me.
BIG NOTE: I also have a 59H with only half the core/ram and it
handles 2.5 terabytes / month NO PROBLEM but it gets it in the form of
just 1,000,000 files.... only 10% of the quantity sent to the other
machine.
So it seems I've found the magic max number for the 591's environment
with 2.1.0.9, but we all know that will change with PTF12, I hope
bigger and better
later
Thanks
Dwight
