I have also been assigned the task of developing a "bare metal" recovery
process for HP-UX 9.X. To date, we have tested cpio and tar as a means of
storing block, character and pipe devices. Both of these commands work well
for creating a file which ADSM accept. However, we have not been successful
at extracting the block, character and pipe devices during the disk rebuild.

Currently, we attach an external disk drive to the workstation and boot from
it. Once the system is booted and the OS drive is prepped (mediainit and
newfs), we recover the OS through ADSM. This works well and includes the
tar or cpio file created earlier. Unfortunately, When we try to extract the
files from the tar or cpio file errors occur and the process fails. Our
guess is that tar and cpio are trying to create links from the new OS drive
to inodes on the external disk drive.

I'm anxious to hear from someone who has defined the fool proof process.

TIA,

Mark Dyer
