Rick -

We are doing roll-forward mode, and have done some "practice" recoveries, and
we feel that while it might be nice to have, the GDG function isn't really
necessary. We let ADSM delete the backups for us at 15 days; we take weekly
full backups and daily incrementals, so at any point in time we have two full
backups and a set of incrementals to go with it.

When we destroyed our test database, and then went through the recovery
process as outlined in the MVS recovery manual, ADSM recovered everything
without us having to know which tapes were required. It did the restore from
the full backup, then applied the incrementals, and lastly did the
roll-forward log. It was slick and clean. We use an STK silo, and there was
literally no intervention required. If you use only manual tapes, the vol-ser
's are in the volume history data set - which I recommend highly that you run
and mirror. It is not a big file - ours measures in a few cylinders.

What I do think is needed, though, is the ability to have the backup process
create a second copy of the tape. We do not mirror our DB - it is on a RAID
device - ICEBERG - I mean RAMAC :-) - but I would feel better if we have two
copies of the tape so that I can send one off-site for disaster recovery and
not have to worry about an outage if I need it for a recovery.

IBM - Has there been a requirement submitted on this?

I've been looking at the ADSM V2 database backup features (full vs.
incremental) and rollforward logging mode. The basic ideas are great
but they still preserve the same sort of restrictions when it comes to
tape management. The restriction of only being able to control the
prefix of the tape data set name is really a pain. I would like to be
able use generation data sets with my MVS server. Also, does ADSM
delete the volume info of the previous full backup when another full
backup is taken? What happens if the current full backup tapes are
damaged? Has anyone encountered these issues and, if so, what did you
     do about them?

     Thanks.
