Hi there!
I have some OS/2 LanServer clients I am planning to backup to
the ADSM MVS server. The only problem I see is the location of
the clients. They are located in our Mainframe building which is
heavily secured. No people are allowed access to the building
with exception for those with temporary access when there are
problems to solve. Because ADSM only allows restores to be
initiated from the client desktop, I wonder how I can initiate
restores remotely. I have not seen a Windows GUI which one can
use to start a restore from another machine (like other backup
product have).
Am I the only one experiencing this problem?
Have other people submitted requirements for a GUI to do this
job?

I have somewhat of the same scenario, and this is what I do:
We have 20+ OS/2 servers in another building, under lock and key. The
Enterprise Management Centre is responsible for performing restores for
all of these users, but they do not have access to the physical desktops
of these servers, nor do they have access to login to these servers with
administrator access. Due to security rules and yadda yadda yadda, a
simple file restore would require two groups to be involved - the EMC and
second level server support.
We now use an OS/2 SystemView console to monitor these servers, and since this
machine is not overused, they use this machine (by changing the nodename in
the dsm.opt file to the machine requiring the restore) to restore to the
local SystemView console's hard drive. Then, without any administrator access,
they fire up one of the utilities in SystemView to do a remote file transfer.
They then proceed to transfer the file to the original location and presto!
No physical access required, and most importantly, they do not require
administrator access to the servers.
Hope this helps
