In response to Bob Parkes questions....
2. You can manage multiple adsm servers from a single console...but
currently each server must be managed as a separate entity (unless
you are using a systems management solution like Tivoli). ADSM
currently does not support a 'hierarchy of servers' function.
3. You can use export/import to recover data between the
MVS and AIX servers...however, this is not recommended due to the
long run times of the export function. Export is intended more as a
vehicle to move data between servers...not as a disaster recovery
utility. For disaster protection, we recommend using the adsm database
and storage pool backup/recovery utilities available on the aix and
mvs servers. Unfortunately, these functions are not cross platform...so
you can't backup from mvs and then restore to aix. Currently, the
only way to do this cross platform disaster recovery scheme is to use
export/import...but again, this is not recommended. You probably would
need to perform database/storage pool backups on each server and then
send the backup volumes offsite (or between sites)...but you would have
to restore on a similar system to what was backed up.
4. For SAP backup to adsm...many customers are using the Backint
product which is an sap r/3 integrated solution for backing up to adsm.
I have appended below an announcement of backint for SAP...

In today's Global environment it is very critical to implement a backup/
restore solution in your SAP R/3 environment. IBM Backup Restore
Interface for ORACLE for SAP R/3 (BACKINT/ADSM) was developed for
system programmers and administrators with responsibility for providing
this critical solution.
BACKINT/ADSM has been specifically developed for the SAP R/3 environment
to integrate the data base administration functions of SAP DBA with the
storage management services of ADSM and to provide the production
functionality necessary for this environment. BACKINT/ADSM together with
SAP DBA and ADSM provides the following BENEFITS:
- online/offline backup for SAP R/3 data base
- backup of archived redo log files
- system directed restore
- full or incremental backup/restore for SAP R/3 data other than
data base, e.g executables, control files, and user data
- reliable storages and tape library management to minimize labor
intensive tasks
- automated backups for operatorless and reproducible process
- enterprise-wide consistent backup/restore service for a variety of
different platforms/applications
- flexible configurations capability for optimization of system resource
and adoption to dynamic changes of the environment
- high backup/restore data rate through parallel processes
- production functionality like automatic password generation, backup
logs duplicate redo log backups, alternate backup paths, data base
backup level control, network management interface
ADSM AND BACKINT/ADSM support a variety of SAP R/3 platforms:
- AIX*
- DIGITAL UNIX**
- HP-UX**
- SINIX**
- SOLARIS**

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
===================
IBM Backup Restore Interface for ORACLE for SAP R/3 (BACKINT/ADSM)
is an interface program that connects the R/3's ORACLE data base
administration utilities SAP DBA with the ADSTAR Distributed
Storage Manager (ADSM) in a seamlessly integrated way.
BACKINT/ADSM enables SAP R/3 administrators to backup or restore SAP R/3
through the accustomed interfaces and functions of SAP DBA while using
all the professional automated data management capabilities of ADSM,
like storage hierarchies, tape libraries, etc.
By installing BACKINT/ADSM, you will be able to take advantage of the
capabilities of ADSM to establish an enterprise-wide consistent
backup/restore solution that not only includes your entire SAP R/3
systems but other critical applications as well.
BACKINT/ADSM with ADSM does provide for reliable and repeatable
operation procedures with which system administrators can manage large
volumes of data more efficiently.
The SAP DBA utilities, BRBACKUP, BRARCHIVE, and BRRESTORE, provide for
online or offline, partial or full backup of table spaces (BRBACKUP),
backup of archived redo log files (BRARCHIVE), and responsive
system guided
restore/recover capabilities (BRRESTORE).
These utilities, which can be invoked either automatically or manually,
call BACKINT/ADSM with the applicable command for backup or restore
and pass a list of files with descriptors (backup ID) to BACKINT/ADSM.
BACKINT/ADSM then connects to an ADSM client, starts the respective
ADSM functions, and returns completion codes and messages back to the
calling SAP DBA utility.
BACKINT/ADSM was designed to shorten the backup/restore window in order
to minimize the impact of system management tasks on the availability
of the R/3 application. To achieve this, BACKINT/ADSM exploits multiple
storage devices, if available, for writing or reading data.
BACKINT/ADSM can establish one session per storage device and run
multiple sessions with balanced data streams in parallel.
You can also customize the way BACKINT/ADSM operates by using keywords
and parameters in a profile which is analyzed at each call of
BACKINT/ADSM pior to execution of ADSM subcommands. This customizing
enables you to adapt BACKINT/ADSM to your specific site's requirements.
