We selected ADSM for server backup after evaluating seventeen vendors that
responded to our Request for Proposal. We then ran a pilot with ADSM V2
under AIX on an RS/6000-C20. We had planned an RS/6000-59H for the
production implementation but are now considering using our MVS IBM 9X2
ten-way system. The ADSM/MVS system will support 100 or more servers
(OS/2, Unix, Novell, HP and NT clients) that are in the data center or on
the FDDI backbone within the same building. Additionally, we are
considering placing ADSM RS/6000 systems in other buildings to support the
many servers in those buildings to avoid the poor performance expected if
we were to support the remote buildings with the MVS system over the T1
network. Given the above scenario, we have several questions.

  1. How much CPU usage for ADSM has been experienced when running ADSM on
  an MVS system?

  2. How could/should we "manage" the remote RS/6000 ADSM systems from the
  central MVS ADSM system?

  3. Given a common tape architecture, and using EXPORT/IMPORT utilities,
can disaster backup be provided between the MVS and RS/6000 environments?
In other words, can an MVS ADSM environment (ADSM's database, catalog,
backup tapes, etc.) be restored on an RS/6000? Or from an RS/6000 to MVS?
  Is anyone doing this?

  4. We are implementing SAP on several HP T500 systems under HP-UX Release
10.1. Is experience available in backing up such an environment with
  ADSM/MVS?

Any comments will be appreciated. Additionally, I would be interested in
talking with any large installations that are using ADSM as described
  above.
