I would use the 'move data' command which is expressly written for 'salvaging'
data from defective media. I've used it a few times to salvage files from 
defective
3490 tapes. While I have never compared timings for move vs audit, I would dare
say that the move command would be faster than the audit just from the fact that
audit commands always seem to take a very long time.
