David Bohm already answered this but I wanted to add that going to
V2 of the adsm/mvs server WILL help tremendously...there is a new
database backup/recovery feature that is the recommended way to
protect your adsm database.  In adsm v1, you could use the dumpdb/
loaddb salvage utility...but many MVS customers chose to use DFDSS...
however this required the adsm server to be quiesced.  V2 BACKUP DB
takes a fast (incremental if you want) online backup of the db...when
you get to v2...this really is the recommended way of protecting the
adsm database (even over dfdss).  In v2, there is also a new storage
pool backup feature (BACKUP STGPOOL) which gives a good way to
protect adsm storage pool data (which in V1 is even more of a headache
to protect than the adsm database was)....
