In describing the Define Library command's Private and Scratch category
codes on p.177 of the ADSM Admin Guide, it says that:

If you decide to connect multiple systems that are running ADSM
to a single 349X library, ensure that none of the systems uses the
same category numbers. Otherwise, two or more systems might try to
use the same volume, and cause a corruption or loss of data.

Unfortunately, this is a dire but vague and unexplained warning. Does this
mean that the 3494 must be logically partitioned such that each connecting
computer has its own Scratch and Private pool? It would seem that it should
be possible for there to at least be a common Scratch category such that it
could serve the scratch needs of all connected computers, and have separate
Private categories for each computer. Does all this preclude the flexibility
of multiple computers sharing a pool of private volumes? (Is the upcoming
NetTAPE product the vehicle then that makes such sharing possible? It's
announcement is also vague.)

I read through the adsmserv/bin/README file, but it doesn't explain further.

thanks, Richard Sims, Boston University OIT
