If you need to use explicit retention periods, use the ADSM Archive
function... you can create archive copy groups / management classes and
override the default management class at execution time.

I'm new to ADSM.

I'm configuring an ADSM 2.1 server on a RS/6000 G30 with a DLT4700 tape
library
attached to it. It will be used to backup 10 unix servers, 5 unix
workstations
and some 30 Macs and PCs. 7 of the servers run data base systems. The G30
does
not run any data base system, but it's got more disk (55GB) than any of the
other servers.

I've allocated 7GB total of disk volumes for backup and 2GB for archive. The
DLT4700 will be able to store about 240GB total on 7 tapes.

First: Management wants a three level backup scheme for the data base files
and other important files:

1. Archive monthly and store for ever (>10 years).
2. Backup/Archive weekly and store 10 weeks.
3. Backup daily (monday-friday) and store 3 weeks.

As I understand it, a file is associated with a management class, and
if I change management class for a file, all copies of that file will
be rebound to the new management class. Then, I can't figure out how to
achieve the above scheme. Is there a way to do it?

Second: A rough estimate gives a total amount of data, including extra
copies, of 250GB. I'm considering buying another DLT4700 and attach it to
the server aswell. This should also make it possible to do space
reclaimation
and use copy groups. Is this a good idea?

Third: If another tape library is bought, management wants to put it in
another part of the building, for securiy reasons (fires etc). This can
be done with a SCSI-fiber/fiber-SCSI module (don't know what it's called),
but I think it might be an idea to attach the library to another system.
Is it possible for ADSM to use libraries attached to other systems?
