OpenTransport is Apple's new communication technology. It provides new
interfaces (both graphical and programming) for AppleTalk, TCP/IP, and
at some point IPX.
OpenTransport is designed to be backward compatible with MacTCP. Therefore,
all current MacTCP apps, including NewsWatcher, Fetch, ADSM, etc, should
work without a problem, though they will probably run much faster.
OpenTransport is written in native PowerPC code, whereas MacTCP was
still in 68K code (and therefore emulated on a PowerMac).
Currently, ADSM does not write to the new OpenTransport API, though we
will be. We have not done extensive testing between OT and ADSM, but
currently I have seen no problems. And I have seen some amazing
transfer rates on an 8100/80! Much better than I have ever seen for
a Mac.
If you have trouble running ADSM with OpenTransport, then please let
me know. Try running one of the other TCP/IP applications first, to
verify that OT is configured properly. Then send me a note with
PowerMac model, OpenTransport version number, System version
number, and a description of the problem.
