There were two sessions at SHARE 84 in Los Angeles that dealt with
what is coming in ADSM. For the benefit of those who were unable to
attend SHARE, I will append below some notes from those two sessions.

Session 5070: ADSM NEWS, Bill Delaney, 03/02/95

Delaney devoted most of his session to introducing ADSM, but did
get to what's new in the last part of the session. I have reproduced
the relevant foils and a few of my own notes below:

                   Platform Enhancements Since GA

o Latest server platforms supported
   - AS/400
   - AIX/6000
   - OS/2
   - VSE (announced)

o Latest client platforms supported
   - AT&T Unix
   - Siemens SINIX
   - Various API clients

                   Server Recovery Enhancements

o Extended R/W methods for mirrored volumes
   - MIRRORREAD DB/LOG NORMAL/VERIFY
(VERIFY will read all copies and make on-the-fly corrections)
   - MIRRORWRITE DB/LOG PARALLEL/SEQUENTIAL

o On-line or stand-alone DB DUMP

o Stand-alone DB LOAD for recovery

o Stand-alone DB AUDIT to check consistency

o Sequential volume history tracking
   - Tracks use/reuse of sequential volumes
   - Helps isolate volumes that need auditing

                   Performance Enhancements

o Multiple migration processes per storage pool
   - Specified for SOURCE storage pool
   - New STGPOOL parameter: MIGPROCESS=n

o Tunable inventory expiration processing
   - Periodic
   - Command-driven

o Tunable client transaction limits (in next PTF)
   - TXNGROUPMAX option
   - TXNBYTELIMIT option
   - Beware of recovery log impacts!

                   Performance Enhancements

o Filespace renaming at server
   - Clients might rename local file systems
   - Avoid excessive expiration/backup activity

o EXPORT performance enhancements
   - Internal sort processing eliminated
   - Single-pass scan of inventory used now

                   General Enhancements

o MVS alternate console support

o Tape dismount message enhancements
   - Server indicates which volumes have been used
   - List can be captured for off-line tape copies

o Broad device support on AIX and OS/2
   - New 4mm, 8mm, QIC tape support
   - IBM 4mm autoloader, 8mm library
   - Andataco and TTi 8mm tape libraries
   - HP, ADIC, DLI 4mm tape libraries

                   Statements of Direction

o Client space management (migrate/recall)

o Multiple file copies (offsite support, i.e., shadow storage pools)

o Integrated server DB backup/restore

o HP-UX and Sun Solaris servers

o Client support for DBMS data

A few notes I made that aren't mentioned in the foils:

o The MVS server will be enhanced to export to a dataset, so that the
exported data can be FTPed elsewhere. They are also thinking of
providing this support for the VM server.

o The Sun server beta had been going on for about six weeks and was
   going well.

o Read/write optical disks are supported for the OS/2 and AIX servers.

o They are looking at giving clients the ability to rename their ADSM
filespaces (to avoid backing a whole disk up when they relabel it).

Session 5074: ADSM TRENDS AND DIRECTIONS, Nick Tabellion, 03/02/95

Tabellion is Director of Distributed Storage Management Products. Like
most "Trends and Directions" presentations that IBMers make at SHARE,
his had no handouts, so I suspect there will also be nothing useful in
the SHARE Proceedings from this session. What follows represents my
best attempt to take notes. It is certainly incomplete. I hope it is
accurate.

New servers:

Sun and HP-UX servers will be available in April. Later, there
will be new servers for OS/2 for the PowerPC and Windows/NT.

A new version of the server will be available in June for MVS and AIX.
They haven't decided which servers to port after those two. (During
questions after his session, Tabellion ammended this statement to say
that the VM server will be the next one ported to the new version.)

The OS/400 server sold more copies in its first month of availability
(last month) than any of the other servers did in their first month.

New clients:
------------
SGI and Windows/NT clients will be available in June.
SGI and Windows/NT clients will be available in June.

In the medium term, there will be clients for Banyan, Win95, DEC/VMS,
OS/2 for PowerPC, Sequent, NEC, Sinix, GIS, and the Posix file system
in MVS OpenEdition.

New device support:

server.

They will be supporting more 4mm, 8mm, and QIC devices.

IBM's "new tape product" will be supported on the MVS and AIX servers,
as will other vendors' tape libraries.

"You will be able to buy the NTP and attach it to your Sun and do
backups."

Application support:
--------------------
Today ADSM talks to DB2/6000, DB2/2, Data Tools, and SAP.
Today ADSM talks to DB2/6000, DB2/2, Data Tools, and SAP.

In the short term, it will talk to Sybase, Lotus Notes, and Emprise.

In the medium term, it will talk to Informix and Oracle and have large
object support for databases.

Currently, one can produce a coherent total backup of Lotus Notes with
Notes running. Will soon be able to do incremental backups of Notes,
and end users will be able to restore their Notes files.

The next release (a year away) will support a hierarchy of servers for
backup and restore.

New function:
-------------
o In the short term:
o In the short term:
   - SNMP alerts
   - Client HSM for AIX, Sun, HP
   - Multiple file copies
   - ADSM server database backup
   - Scheduled administrative commands
   - Enhanced device support

o In the medium term (next year or when they put out the new server for
   your platform):
   - Hierarchy of servers
   - Client HSM function for other clients
   - SQL interface for the ADSM database
   - Enhanced enterprise control
   - DCE support
   - Tape management

o In the long term:
   - Automated download of maintenance (new clients)

Other notes:

When he got to the "DCE support" bullet, Tabellion mentioned single
logon. He did not mention encryption across the network. (I wish I
had asked about that.)

Support for AFS and DFS systems will come out in the service stream.

V2R1 of the AIX and MVS servers will come out in June.

There will be an incremental export capability so that one can export
just the backups made the previous night.

Remote vaulting and remote tape management support will be done.

They will automate the recovery process for client and server disasters.
