R2 clients are fully compatible with R1 servers. R2 basically added
a new group of clients, two new servers (AIX and OS/2), and some new
communication methods.
Not only are the R2 clients compatible with your R1 VM server, I strongly
urge you to update all of your clients to R2 code .....
