How to end Netware client scheduler?

How does one terminate the Netware (R2--IP20145) client?

The manual suggests UNLOAD DSMC (section 3.7.7 in my VM Collection
book), but trying that gives a message that unloading the NLM will
crash the file server.  It's a message to be believed, as we've crashed
a file server that way.  So, how does one stop the scheduler without
crashing the file server?!
