In regards to the preferences file not being found.  I had this problem
when starting the scheduler and found that the reason was that the name
of the file was not exactly correct.  In my case there was a trailing
space that had to be removed.  The message I was getting was very much
like "DSM Preferences not found in default path".  I'm not much of a
mac-head myself, so this took me a while to figure out.
