Automatic discovery requires that the ARP cache of what you have discovered contain the addresses of things you haven't, so if you have isolated subnets with devices which only talk to each other, then you will not find anything new.

It has ALWAYS been the case that IBM has recommended that all your routers be put in the seed file, and for that exact reason.

You just moved from Windows, correct? Well Windows discovery has a ping spray option to speed things along. It was added for trade shows because the demo guys seldom knew anything else about the networks they were attached to and of course had no SNMP. But UNIX does not have that option, so unless you craft your seed file correctly, it may take a long time to find every thing.

So I'll bet auto-discovery is working just fine; it's just that it hasn't got enough seeds to work on. Try this. While netmon is up and running, add the community name for some device you haven't discovered yet into xnmsnmpconf and then ping it. It will get added to the map and database in just a few minutes.

[NV-L] NV 7.1.5 Linux - Automatic Discovery not working

Hi List,

We have recently installed NV 7.1.5(base no FP) on linux (Red Hat AS4), i have noticed that the automatic discovery thingy is not working properly, i have to manually add the routers in the seed file in order to be discovered, in fact the automatic discovery is not working at all. The discovery option is set to 'All Networks', but yet its not going beyond the seed file :( . Any clues where to look?

Regards,
