Alfred is right, it varies, but I'm
having pretty good luck with this approach:
If the snmp sysObjectID of the device
is 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.*
then it is a catalyst. Use the switch
mib. Its serial number is at ".1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.1.2.19.0"
otherwise get its serial number from
the old temporary mib: ".1.3.6.1.4.1.9.3.6.3.0"
Similarly, for the model number:
If the snmp sysObjectID of the device
is 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.*
then it is a catalyst. Use the
switch mib. Its model number is at ".1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.1.2.16.0"
otherwise, first try the Entity mib:
".1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.2.1"
If nothing is there, try the old temporary
mib: ".1.3.6.1.4.1.9.3.6.1.0"
This customer has fairly current, and
fairly consistent, devices and code levels, and using this
approach we are able to populate serial
number and model fields very consistently.

that depends entirely on the brand
of your switches.
if you have cisco you might want
to look at the ENTITY-MIB and CISCO-ENTITY-ASSET-MIB mibs.
please note that the serial numbers
retrieved from these mibs "MIGHT NOT" correspond with those
on the outside of the physical
parts.
