since you are sending traps to a DNS alias, there are less reasons to place it on NV server.

You can feel very comfortable for installing the MLM on another machine. There are some great rule capabilities on both Windows and Unix flavors. There are a few difference between them, mainly in what kind of SNMP MIB monitoring you can do with each of them. But for trap processing, either should work great for you. It will only take a very reasonable box for this. So I suggest that you install it in a box and setup a script to do a trap storm at it and see how well the box holds up. I have thrown 10,000 traps (i wrote a script to fork many background processes) at the MLM at one time and saw it absorb and process them nicely. Have fun doing your testing.
