Two different questions. Yes netmon is multi-threaded on Windows. But that's irrelevant to the question you asked. Even single-threaded as on UNIX, he is never idle. The deal is that he manages everything by queues or lists of nodes. He has a ping list. The default size as I recall is 16. He puts devices on his current ping list by their service characteristics, and pins the entire list at once, serially, and keeps track of who responds an who doesn't. When a node responds it goes off the list. When the first time-out occurs, pings for nodes still on the list are re-issued.
You might want to look at the list archives if you are curious about how netmon works. Generally speaking, he's quite good at what he does if you have configured everything correctly in the SNMP polling options

Question that I should hope someone can answer. Is Netmon Single Threaded on the NT version? Meaning in the discovery process I had 1st 2nd and 3rd Ping timeout requests set to 20 30 and 40 seconds respectively. Dies this mean that for those 20 seconds on the 1st ping try netmon does nothing else?
