Jason,

Here's some background (most of which you may know).....

ISO originally created the scheme for identifying objects. This scheme uses
integers assigned in a universal tree, defined by ISO. ISO delegates
branches of that tree to various organizations, which in turn redelegate
sub branches to other organizations.

In ISO and ITU networking standards, the identifiers are called OBJECT
IDENTIFIERS and shown as series of integers (optionally with string labels)
separated by spaces.

The IETF for historical reasons has a branch under the US DOD. (The
Internet's predecessor, the Arpanet, was funded by DOD) The IETF standards
refer to OBJECT IDENTIFIERS as OIDs for short and use a dot as a separator
when specifying a full OID.

So if you are dealing with Internet objects, your OID starts with
iso(1).org(3).dod(6).internet(1).

The IETF MIBs use iso(1).org(3).dod(6).internet(1).mgmt(2) and
iso(1).org(3).dod(6).internet(1).snmpV2(6)

IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority has
iso(1).org(3).dod(6).internet(1).private(4).enterprise(1) as a branch where
it will register companies. So your IANA assigned sub identifier 3876 goes
on the end of that and you can start assigning your own sub identifiers
below it for your private SNMP object definitions.

It is also possible to get a sub identifier directly off iso(1).org(3). by
getting a sponsoring authority to request one from ISO. ISO, in fact, is an
association of national standards bodies, so the most direct route for you
is to get the US national standards body, ANSI, to be the sponsoring
authority. Another ISO member, the British Standards Institution (BSI)
actually does the allocation. It appears that someone at ARINC put in the
request through ANSI in 1994 and he or she said it was for the purpose of
registering objects for OSI-based systems for ARINC and the aeronautical
industry. The BSI, on behalf of ISO, assigned you {iso(1) org(3)
arinc(74)}. If you want more information on this, I would talk to ANSI and
BSI.

However, OSI/ITU management standards constitute a parallel universe to the
IETF/SNMP standards. If you are defining SNMP objects I would stick to the
1.3.6.1.4.1.3876 branch.
