We use both actually. For Half Duplex lines, though, you can add ifInOctets
and ifOutOctets together to get utilization.
Our detailed report involves using a mib expression to collect both incoming
and outgoing interface utilization as this is more representative in
providing utilization reports. Hence our reports consist of both Transmit
and Received utilization. Utilization is calculated as
100 * 8 * ifInOctets / ifSpeed and
100 * 8 * ifOutOctets / ifSpeed
of course this is only for serial or ethernet links. we use the the frame
relay mibs if we want to collect information from FR interfaces again using
a mib expression.

Subject: [NV-L] Report of Link Utilization
Hi,
To generate Link Utilization report, shall I use InOctets, or Outoctets to
get the txt data as output using snmpColDump command, which I'll insert in
the excel sheet and generate link utilization graph (Time Vs. Kbps). Pls
describe how to get the detailed report on this.
Regards,
Santosh
