Right - "According to the documentation"
My question was about why it is NOT working according to the documentation.
We don't want "-w 0" as we do want it to actually fail eventually so that it
doesn't leave our DB in hot backup mode for say an entire weekend as it might
take it a while to commit changes (assuming the archive logs filesystem didn't
fill first due to all the held commits from hot backup mode).
Also it doesn't seem to me the "-w 0" would have helped as it appears to have
seen the status 25 as an "exit" of the process so the "-w 0" just like the "-w
12:00:00" would have exited at exactly the same point.

According to the documentation, that should have waited for 12 hours. To wait
an infinite time, use the option "-w 0". You never know how long a job will
sit in a queued state due to storage contention.
