Hi all.  The 7.1.0.3 patch supports vSphere 5 environments and has been released.  The release binaries are posted at: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH174256 and Release Notes are available at: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC4886.

Hi Simon,

I just spotted this thread, after looking at new thread about NBU 7.1.0.3 and vSphere 5 (There isn't a product called VMware 5. Try to break it down into support for vCenter 5, ESXi 5 and hardware version 8).

Some things to put it in perspective:

1. Take a look at what I copied into the other thread - it's useful info I found in google cache on what is available with 7.1.0.3 versus 7.5

2. Even though VMware announced the new version over a few months ago, courses in vSphere 5 have only started in rolling in the past couple of months, so this would have to be the early adopter's world right now.

3. NBU 7.0.1 was FA in July 2011, and one of its main features was 4.1 support, and even just going from vSphere 4.0 to 4.1 had considerable differences let alone up to vSphere 5, and it is a massive product suite. Meanwhile NBU 7.0.2 came out with alot of changes to dedupe. So, it's not like they haven't been busy. (http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/netbackup-701-first-availability-fa-program)

4. Veeam isn't the only product that has had support for vSphere 5 earlier - Simpana did too. Whereas another product has only just announced VADP support. But I think there's more to backup products than coverage of one hypervisor. Some products are positioning themselves as agile, both in terms of progression and matching a dynamic virtual environment, others suit more conservative organisations that are not early adopters, and it's also key to look at how much integration there is, functionality (whose APIs) and UI. I don't think it's a case of one company has adopted, so others should be - it's never so simple with backup :).

5. Agree support is essential, but there's a lot more to weigh up. Really quickly, features such as restore testing and chargeback reporting in Veeam, or tape archive, and range of DR scenarios with NBU. You may find you need to use a combination. I gather it's not that uncommon with Veeam to see it in combination.

Hope this helps

Robyn

Morning
I wanted to see if anyone can shed some light on this question, because I am not able to find the "official" answer.

VMware announced several months ago about vmware5. However, reading on some Symantec "Blog" sites, they talk about VMware5 being supported in NetBackup 7.5.

Well, we are at 7.0.1 and I was kind of hoping that NetBackup and VMware5 would work in harmony.

It is a little puzzling, because another product called VEEAM supports VMware 5 already. Should I really have to change to a different product to get support?

If anyone either from Symantec, or anyone that has deployed VMware 5 can advise, this would be apprecaited, as I think its a bit foolish to upgrade to the later product if your backup solution doesnt meet the support requirements.

Thank you for your help and any input :-)
