Re: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup 7.1 and Exchange 2007 integration

Truthfully I didn’t do the initial setup so can’t answer that.
The only issue I got involved with for the GRT was that initially when they told us it couldn’t be done to our dedupe mounts and we created
the static disk mounts it still failed. This turned out to be a known issue (by Symantec engineers anyway) related to the fact that we’d converted our Exchange 2003 accounts to Exchange 2010. Symantec gave us a binary patch to resolve that issue. (We
never did try going back to see if dedupe mounts would work after that mainly because our MS Admin was sick of it by then.)

Jeff,
Do you see a significant increase in time when doing the GRT backup?

The GRT restores (at least in Exchange 2010) don’t require NFS on the Windows server but do require a storage device to send the backups
to which can NOT be a deduplication appliance. In our environment we have disks allocated to our Linux master server and do the GRT backup to those disks via the storage unit defined in NBU.
The GRT backups allow for granular (i.e. single mailbox) restores as opposed to restoring the whole Exchange backup. We do both the
GRT and the full backup. The full backup allows for restore in case our entire Exchange DB gets hosed. You aren’t required to do GRT if you don’t want to do single mailbox restores.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup 7.1 and Exchange 2007 integration
Hi to all.
We’re a brand new NetBackup site.. converting from another backup solution entirely.
Basic stuff going well, got windows, solaris, HP-UX, linux clients all happily backing up.
Now on to the “harder” stuff! We are currently running Exchange 2007, so I started reading the “NetBackup for Microsoft Exchange
Server Administrator’s Guide” and my eyes kind of glazed over.
It seems to me there are like 4 different kinds of backups for Exchange.. that GRT (Granular Recovery) that seems to need NFS for windows (UGH),
snapshot backups, Instant Recovery backups, and MAPI backups. Is there a document that succinctly explains these and the differences? What method of backup for Exchange do most NetBackup installations employ?
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
