What is the purpose of the parameter anyway? If the OS will route however the 
OS is configured, it seems like it will only work if the interfaces are on the 
same subnet.

Yes, host files seems to be the only sure way to get traffic to traverse the 
network you want, but it can be cumbersome depending on the number of clients.

Anyone used the facilities in 7.1 to set up preferred networks?
