I’m with Rusty on this.   We have been using a separate backup LAN for a few years now and have never used REQUIRED_INTERFACE.   We simply set a backup host name (e.g. if primary is myhost then backup is myhostb) and add that to /etc/hosts on master and add the backup LAN IP for the master to hosts on the individual servers.

In the recent issues we had with host name resolution one of the first recommendations we got was for using REQUIRED_INTERFACE but I resisted that mainly because I wasn’t sure what that would do to the separate interface we use to connect to our Dedupe appliances.   As seen in that thread (bpclntcmd on hp-ux) the resolution had nothing to do with use of REQUIRED_INTERFACE.   If you’re being pushed to do this by support you might want to push back.

I've never liked REQUIRED_INTERFACE as it seems to be problematic. Perhaps it's just me. Most of our NBU servers have at least 3 networks (backup network, mgmt network and metadata/intra-nbu network). We use multiple host file entries with the different interface names and corresponding entries on the client. We also have to put the proper SERVER entries in place. It's probably more complicated but as long as these entries don't get messed with, all works perfectly. My point is perhaps this type of solution could work for you.

[Veritas-bu]  REQUIRED_INTERFACE,        anyone using private backup networks?

Anybody have working experience on the "require_network" or "required_interface" functionality?

Our clients/media servers have a private network to traverse. Master is not connected (different site) however...v7.1.

Thanks!
