OK...Problem solved.

The actual problems was in fact the Windows WMI Repository. It had to be blown 
away and rebuilt. Then the NBU client s/w could be installed and backups 
resumed as normal.

Thanks to all who responded here and I just wanted to jump back on here and 
post what the fix was.
