Thanks for the confirmation -- so the documentation lies about that
feature (multiple retentions) being present.
We do have the Vault option, so that's good news. Looks like the setting
to "Expire original disk backup images after" a certain number of hours
will meet our needs for clearing out the staging area after duplication.
