Also look at /vol/vol0/etc/log/backup.  That can have other information
about backup starts and stops.

Does the backup actually register in that file?  It usually has to mount
a tape in the drive successfully before it will begin the dump phase.
If there's an error with the mount, the backup file will probably be
empty. 

You can also enable the ndmpdlog, but that can be annoying to look at.
