Hi Simon,
Thanks for your reply.
I guess that the scenario you explained is for Incremental Backup, while I'm
using Full Backup for all backups.
Maybe it's not right then?
Let me make it simpler:
Suppose I have 3 FULL BMR backups:
- FULL BMR Backup A
- FULL BMR Backup B
- FULL BMR Backup C
Then, I want to BMR restore to "B", does the BMR restore always check/go back
to "A" first or also check/go forward to "C" as well?
(Consider that "B" itself is a FULL BMR backup).
Thanks in advance.

Adrian
I could be wrong here, but BMR goes back to the last "current configuration
date and time". So if the "A" backup was a FULL and has the BMR info on this,
then it would go back to "A" first.
This is the behaviour I see, and as I said, I thought it was default.
As an example, I have a Server called SERVER1 that had its BMR updated last
night at 14.10.09 20:16. this was an INCREMENTAL BACKUP. However, when it
restores, it still looks for the Full backup first, normally on a different
tape. Then if required, it would use the last tape for the Incremental that was
run!
Maybe its not right then ?
Simon

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Point in Time Bare Metal Restore Problem
Dear all,
I have a problem of Point in Time Bare Metal Restore (BMR) using Netbackup 6.5
(both Master Server & Client are using the same version).
Suppose I have 3 successful BMR backups of UNIX system (AIX 5.3.03), e.g.:
- BMR backup "A" (Full backup, day 1, backup ID 001, stored at Tape 1)
- BMR backup "B" (Full backup, day 2, backup ID 002, stored at Tape 2)
- BMR backup "C" (Full backup, day 3, backup ID 003, stored at Tape 3) All the
backups run with IBM Library.
And today I want to restore the UNIX system back to day 2, and I had done a
"Prepare to restore" by using the BMR backup "B".
The BMR restore process used an SRT media boot and I just inserted Tape 2 into
the library.
And here is the problem... the BMR restore process asked for Tape 1 (backup
"A") and it stopped at this condition:
Here is the log at the console screen:
---- BEGIN LOG -----
..
...
....
Restoring /tmp/ file system...
Restoring /var/ file system...
Restore failed.
Failed command: /SPOT/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bprestore -L /tmp/fifo.6888 -w -H
-K -W -O -T -C bendev -S veritas -R /tmp/rename -f /tmp/listfile.fs. rc=5
Bare Metal Restore has failed.
---- END LOG -----
Here is the log from Administrator Console:
Oct 7, 2009 4:34:59 PM - begin Restore

PM - end Restore; elapsed time 0:00:14 the restore failed to recover the
requested files (5)
--> The problem came from /var which has some subdirectories stored in BMR
backup "A" (Tape 1: PE01L3).
Then, I retried the BMR restore (Prepare to Restore by using BMR backup "B").
This time, I inserted all the tapes into the library.
The restore process ended successfully, but it still restored some files &
subdirectories that belong to BMR backup "A" (Tape 1).
Here is one of the BMR restore logs which looked for BMR backup "A" (backup ID
001):

Restore; elapsed time 0:00:50 the requested operation was successfully
completed (0)
NOTE:
the rest of the BMR restore logs, were successfully completed: "restoring from
image bendev_xxxxxxx002".
I wonder why the BMR restore process always looks for the earliest backup sets,
eventhough I did the "Prepare to Restore" using the second/most recent backup
set.
Could someone please help me with this problem?
Thank you in advance.
