I have other question

1. Server , Tape, Storage connect to SAN SW  ( SAN )
2. Server connect to Tape ( Direct )
    Server connect to Storage ( Direct )

Have any diffirent between 1 and 2 when backup data from Storage to Tape. 
What's faster than?
