You need to have the enterprise client on your VCB PROXY servers. Nothing more
than that..... it works for my clients

Ok lets verify.

1) in the activity monitor - you know that you have at least 1 job that
completed ok, and shows that it as >0 kb backed up on that job. ( and
this is NOT a catalog backup that you are looking for but a normal
server or database backup)
2)this job that you know completed ok - what policy is it in - now check
that policy - what is the Policy Type?
3) when you open the BAR - you go to File/Specify Netbackup machines
4) in the Specify window - the SERVER to use for backups and restores is
your MASTER - do not use any server but the MASTER
5) in the filed for Source you have your client server name - this name
must exactly match the job that you saw in step 1. (if step 1 was
serverA then here it must be serverA if it was Servera.mydomain.com then
it has to be Servera.mydomain.com - case must match)
6) destination can be the same as source or a different server
7) Policy type for restores - this MUST MATCH the policy type you found
in step 2
8) click ok
9) Press Select for Restore ( if you use the pull down choose Normal
Backup)

If this does not work, send more info about your policy to us.

All the suggested checks was already done. In case if i am making a
mistake in putting the right details in Restore window how about
Catalog.
I am not getting the image there also.

Hi ,

I'm hoping someone can verify a license question. We're setting up an
environment with Vmware - several esx machines , 2 w2k media/vcb servers
and a windows master cluster ( 6.5.3) Symantec have said we need an
enterprise license per esx machine, and I'm just wondering why! If it's
vcb doing the work, and we're communicating just through 1 VC server I
would have thought at mose 3, one per vcb and maybe 1 for the VC . How
are you guys licensing it?

TIA
Gary

Bah... It just stopped hating me is all. :-)

Just started looking into it, and the more I looked, the more it seemed
okay. And in fact it appears okay.

I had no problems loading a tape in the slot. Device Manager showed the
label. 'mt -f <drive> status' showed a tape loaded. I did a test
backup and that worked fine and my scheduled ones last night didn't take
the drive down.

Oh well, I guess it just wanted some attention.

Just curious about this backup - does it allow you to backup a vm while it is
running?

I am new to this so, please go easy on me.

Thanks for understanding...

Hello Rodrigo,

SAN Client installation just needs a regular NetBackup install. No
special installation is required for the core NetBackup Fibre Transport
components. The components are installed when you install NetBackup
Media Servers and Clients. The feature needs a SAN Client license on the
Master and EMM servers.

There are a few very simple configuration steps required to run Fibre
Transport services and Media servers and Clients.

You can find all the details here:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/290238.htm

The document that Marianne pointed to is the "SAN Client Deployment -
Best Practices and Performance Metrics" guide.

It provides some information on performance considerations and best
practices when deploying the SAN Client. The document is intended to
provide the necessary information to help take full advantage of this
feature.

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/293110.htm

Thanks,

Tanuja

NBU can use VCB (Vmware Consolidated Backup) to do backups of VM's. This does
allow a VM to be running whilst in the process of being backed up.

Hi,

Are your jobs all using the same policy unit?
Are your jobs all using the same MPX setting?
Are your policies all set to allow multiple streams and set to use MPX?
Are your storage units set to use MPX?
Are your jobs of the same type, e.g., Filesystem?

Justin.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, as I lost my emails, but what is
the Max Job Settings set for?
Got the Hosts on the left pane of the window, then expand your Master,
then double click the Master Server.

Under Global Attributes, what is the "Maximum Jobs per client" set for ?

It needs to be set higher. Try 4.

Set to 99 as a test and re-try mate!

I cant find all the emails, but at a guess, are you getting jobst stuck
or queued and not moving? If so, increase the Max jobs Per Client
setting and retry the backups !

And report back your findings to us.

regards
Simon

Hi All,

Im facing a similar issue. We have LTO2 tapes which has native capacity of 200
GB and compressed capacity of 400 GB.
Did the following tests to check which compression can help in our environment.

Actual data size 250 GB
With software compression enabled, data written on tape is 99 GB
With hardware compression enabled , data written on tape is 250 GB

So, should i conclude that h/w compression is not useful or is there something
wrong with the drive.

Regards,
Backupadmin

Are any of the clients set to only allow a small number of jobs to run
at once?

Are on you 6.x?
The next time you see jobs not running when you think they should look
at the activity monitor and read what is in the 'State Details' column.
This will tell you Why it is not running ( saying what its reason is for
waiting).

Hi,

Are your jobs all using the same policy unit?
Are your jobs all using the same MPX setting?
Are your policies all set to allow multiple streams and set to use MPX?
Are your storage units set to use MPX?
Are your jobs of the same type, e.g., Filesystem?

Justin.

neither show you how full each tape is (guessing they were different
tapes). with software compression, you got 2.5:1, so 99 gb is written
on the tape, which may have made the tape 1/2 full. with the hardware
compression, 250 was written to tape, and the tape may still be only 1/2
full or less. you would have to do another backup, and see if another
250 gb can fit on the tape. then you'd get 500gb on a 200gb tape, which
would be 2.5:1 compression. you'd at least expect to get another 150gb
on the tape, which would be 400gb total, which would be 2:1.
compression varies by type of data. we get over 3:1 on some backup
tapes. you need more testing before you conclude anything.

good luck,
jerald

It all depends on compressibility of data.
