I did this very same thing, Solaris 2.7 to Solaris 10, copied
/usr/openv, disconnected the old server, and did the upgrade process. I
even decommissioned a dead media server in the process and added one
when we were done.

It did take about half a day, and I had some catalog corruption that I
was able to handle myself. Some catalog data for a couple of desktop
backups from 4+ years ago were damaged, and we collectively decided that
data was not worth saving. I did preserve the media and image records so
if I wanted to re-import that data, I could try.

We changed the IP address of the master server, but kept the hostname
the same. Catching all the details in the several DNS servers was a bit
of a challenge, but not impossible.

The old server stayed online but disconnected from the network until we
had a week of successful backups run. Somewhere I once found a document
that said which NBU binaries were the same code for which Solaris
release. I think the installed files for Sol9 and 10 were the same, but
not for 2.7, so you couldn't just drop these files onto a Solaris 10
system and let it run. I wish I could remember everything.
