I took the 6.5 windows & unix beta tests. I didn't study anything, just
winged it. They're not ALL that much different from previous NetBackup
exams they just have some 6.5 specific function questions added. Study
anything your rep listed as a new and "improved" feature for 6.5 and
that should cover most of it.

Greetings,

I just wanted to verify something with regards to TIR files. I think I
may have some corrupt files that are helping create larger than expected
image catalog files. We normally run a full backup on Friday. My plan
is to get rid of the old TIR files and let the full backup create a new
file. I believe I did this in the past, but don't remember since it has
been at least 5 years since I did it. I shouldn't need to do anything
other than delete or move the /usr/openv/netbackup/tir_info directory on
the clients correct?

I had previously posted about why the catalog images for our hpux
servers were so large. I haven't heard anything back from a support
call I opened but I did decide to find out if the compress was working
and how old the files were when it started compressing them. I found
nothing was compressed. I then found that it is looking for
/usr/bin/compress which did not get put on this new build (RHEL4.5). I
was able to get compress/uncompress on the server and it did compress
and saved quite a bit of space. At least the file system should not
fill up. The image directories are still more than 3x larger than the
old 5.0 server which is why I'm thinking the TIR files may be hosed up.

Thanks,

Jeff

I have 4 drives that I was using for NDMP. These 4 drives were shared
with other media servers. I removed the drives temporarily because I
was having some problems with NDMP -- but now when re-adding them back
in as ndmp drives I get the following error: "drive name already in
use." I only get the error when trying to add the drive to my SSO
configuration as an ndmp drive. I've tried doing the tpautoconf
-replace_drive drive_name -path path_name ... and I've tried doing the
tpautoconf -report_disc on each of my media servers but I haven't had
much luck in resolving the "drive name already in use" error. This
error occurs after clicking the OK button in the 'Add New drive" window.
I've opened up a ticket with symantec but it has been two weeks and
still no solution.

Thanks,

Forum,

With so many good and critical topics discussed in this invaluable
forum, I'd like to propose a suggestion to the forum in returning to a
Veritas version level description in the e-mail "subject" area first,
which could help each of us determine, in part, if we wish to open,
review and respond in support.

Most of us can breeze through current e-mail's by topic and decide to
read it or not.

For some who are focused in the 5.x, 6.0 to 6.5x upgrade process, I've
unexpectedly found good information in e-mail's whose subject
descriptions don't reference anything to do with the issues or problems
in the 6.x upgrade process.

This suggestion may also be helpful as we migrate through the 6.5.x +
releases/patches in the upcoming year(s).

My suggestion is certainly not limited to my area of focus, but perhaps
for any of us who may want to first qualify their primary question or
issue based their current running version level 1st, and the issue 2nd.

I just recall this being a "norm" 4+ years ago.

Maybe long term member's like Ed, Simon and Justin or others, including
the WEB Master can chime in and correct my assumptions on forum
protocol.

Thanks,
Scott J.

Research?

What are your questions after reading the NetBackup System

Well it looks like I am stuffed, as the client now wants a Media Server
as well as client based, and the compatability for 5.1 does not list
it!! only as a client!

So doomed from the start !

As it turns out from Simon's response x86_64 was not correct because he
wasn't talking about Linux but rather Windows.

Here we're not doing any 64 bit Windows yet so unfortunately I can't
answer.

The fact that the 32 bit client for Linux can be made to work on 64 bit
Linux suggests there is likely a way to do it on Windows so long as it
has some sort of backwards compatibility like Linux does by installing
libraries for that purpose. At least we know hardware isn't the
limitation so if it doesn't work it would be the OS.

Linux on x64 is referring to the AMD Opteron and Intel EM-64T
processors, so x86_64 would be correct.

Itanuium needs a completely different version and is 64 bit only.

What do you mean by "x64". Linux x86_64? Itanium? Something else?

If it is Linux x86_64 bit you can install the 2.4 kernel client (32 bit)
and add compatibility libraries to make it work properly.

I doubt you'll get much out of this proposal:
1) Some of the posts come from a on line forum.
2) You'll always have newbies who don't know the rules.
3) Sometimes the subject line is most relevant to the subject if a bit
lengthy and added details that could be put in the body in the subject
would simply make it too long.
4) The point in this list isn't just to offer tips to others but to ask
questions hopefully with an eye to getting them answered. Given that
it seems reasonable subscribers should open all messages to see if they
can offer the assistance requested rather than simply choose to read the
ones they think will help themselves.
5) Why limit it to version? Why not platform (Windows 32 bit, Windows
64 bit, Windows XP, Windows NT version, Windows 2000, Windows 2003,
UNIX: Solaris 8, 9, 10, OpenSolaris, FreeBSD, HP-UX 11.0, 11.11, 11.23,
AIX...
6) Some folks are just contrary. :-)

The deal is there is a lot of information that may or may not be
relevant to the question asked. Ideally the user is including that in
their post. If not one can question (as I did yesterday on the question
about x64).

What kind of client?

On UNIX/Linux all the policy information is under
<installpath>/netbackup/db/class/<policyname>. The files there are
ascii text. He could send those to you.

Also not sure why you're saying he can only send "text". Some mail
filters complain about things that don't have a .txt suffix but you can
add that to anything. One thing you could do is pull up the information
in the GUI (on Windows). Do a Ctrl-Print Screen then paste it into a
MS-Word DOC and mail that. If the mail filter blocked .doc files he
could simply at .txt to the end of the name of the attachment.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Command Line for Master Server Properties

I'm a GUI GUY but I'm trying to help a friend troubleshoot his NBU
setup. He made a change in the Master Server properties for VSP but
then all of his jobs ran 2 or 3 times last night even though they were
successful. Immediately I thought "Frequency" but his policy is set for
a 4 day Frequency. I want him to send me the Master Server Properties
setting and the only way for him to send it to me is in a text file.
What is the command line that will pipe that information for me?

Thanks,

Randy
