"outside" the production SAN. It *is* about SAN reliability. The best practice is to store your catalog on the most highly available storage system you have available and to back that data up regularly. How you achieve that is up to you.
I don't think you'll find too many people saying that a large catalog on a single RAID 5 set is the best practice. RAID 1 maybe... When it comes to a catalog, the only benefit of RAID 5 over RAID 1 is price. If you want to base your catalog availability on what's cheaper, then that too is your choice to make. RAID 5 sets are more likely to have data loss than RAID 1. That fact is indisputable.
