I've seen it used to good effect several times, and it's also refered to in this Whitepaper: http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/products/White_Papers/Data_Protection/nbu_db2_max_large_db_backup_and_restore_perf_wp_110904.pdf You'll need a hefty amount of memory as well, because you'll need a lot of these big buffers to get the best out of these drives.
