Yes, that method works fine.  Hence my statement that for any given
platform (NetApp in this case), there might be a solution.  It's just
that "NDMP" isn't giving you anything here.  It's an implementation
detail.

There's no way to predict ahead of time that capability.  It would have
to be investigated product-by-product.

Yes.  And there's nothing preventing them from using something
completely unknown (although in practice most of them appear to use
something similar to existing formats).  I've never tried to do any type
of direct inspection of anything other than NetApp, though.

Depends on "require".  I don't recall seeing any that support or mention
examining NDMP data via other methods, but it might work if you try to
decode the datastream.
