Wayne,

We are currently using Aptare, but management wanted to look at VBR as well. While a decision hasn't been made, Symantec dropped the ball on their presentation to us so that's one strike for them.
As far as comparing, I think they are both pretty similiar. They both use Web 2.0 technology, have canned reports, and have ability to dig into the database with custom sql queries for those one off reports. Aptare uses Oracle where VBR uses Sybase. I've heard reports of a few organizations pulling out their VBR installations because it didn't scale enough. One of Aptare's advantages is that they support more backup products with more details than VBR. If you're interested, Aptare can also do storage reporting. I have used this product at a couple of companies and I am extremely impressed with it and their support, when you need it, is outstanding. Finally, an engineer that used to work on VBR is now working with Aptare - that speaks volumes to me. Something that has also always bothered me is that Veritas took this long to get a decent reporting product out when customers have complained for years about Advanced Reporter and how crappy it was.

I would definitely go into the presentation armed with requirements (of course) and have them show you real world reports for something you would need. If you're running Aptare now and not on 6.5, you owe it to yourself to get a Aptare 6.5 presentation to at least be on the same playing field with VBR.

Anyone using or have an opinion on Veritas Backup Reporter?  How does it compare with Aptare?  My manager has scheduled a meeting with Symantec and Backup Reporter is one of the topics.  I’d like to get some opinions and a heads up before hearing the sales pitch.
