Hi Folks,

Has anyone had any luck backing up Windows Vista with Netbackup 5.1?
(I know Vista is only official supported in 6.x).

We are trying to back up a Vista box on a Solaris NB5.1MP6 media server.

We are seeing that Netbackup is incorrectly following Vista junction
points (similar to "hard-links" in unix) even though "Cross mount points
is not selected". This causes duplicate data to be backed up. In Vista,
there are user profiles junctions that loop back to itself. When
Netbackup encounters these, it attempts to traverse the junction until
it reaches the 1024byte filename limit (watch out if you have to restore
this!). This results in many status "1" errors.

About Vista junction points:

      http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa819663.aspx

According to Microsoft, a special API must be used in order to properly
traverse a filesystem otherwise. Supposedly this is built into Vista's
VSS service (really only supported for Windows 2003 server on Netbackup
5.x).

As a work around, we tried backing up a Vista box by selecting VSS for
the open file option but it appears that Netbackup is still traversing the
Vista junction points.

Has anyone else had any luck with backing up Vista?

Thanks,
John Yu
